We frequently assist clients with obtaining an Austrian residence permit for students, also known as a “student visa.” To help you better understand this process, we have put together a list of 10 commonly asked questions and their answers.

 

1. What is a residence permit for students?

Non-EU citizens can apply for a residence permit if they intend to stay in Austria for more than 6 months to pursue a study program.

2. Who can apply for a student visa?

Applicants must meet general prerequisites for a residence permit, as well as specific conditions for the student’s permit. These include sufficient financial means, health insurance, accommodation, and posing no threat to public safety.

3. What are the specific conditions for students?

Students must provide confirmation of admission and enrolment in an Austrian university or institute of higher learning (for initial applications). Several other documents such as extracts from the criminal register (for initial applications) may be necessary.

4. How long are student visas valid?

Student visas are typically issued for one year. But permits can be issued for up to 2 years, eg. for students participating in an EU project. Additionally, renewal of the permit is contingent upon successful study progress.

5. Which financial means do applicants need to prove for a student visa (in 2023)?

Persons under 24 years of age must have access to at least EUR 569.11 per month. Persons over 24, however,  must have access to at least EUR 1,030.49 per month. A married couple must have access to at least EUR 1,625.71 per month. An additional monthly amount of approximately EUR 159.00 is required for each child in the family. Applicants must prove the origin of funds to authorities.

6. Is it possible for third parties to act as guarantors?

Yes, a third person can act as a guarantor for the applicant’s financial needs. Additionally, guarantors need to show proof of income and monthly expenses.

7. Which additional documents do student permit applicants need to show?

Documents required include an official application form for a residence permit in German. Also, a valid travel document and a birth certificate or equivalent document are necessary. The authorities may request additional documents based on the applicant’s circumstances.

8. What is the competent authority for a student visa application?

The application can be made at the respective embassy or consulate abroad. or if the applicant’s nationality allows, they may file their application with the local authorities in Austria.

9. Can someone else submit the application as proxy for the student?

No, the applicant must file the application in person. They may have to do so before entering Austria abroad at the Austrian consulate or embassy. Also, they may be allowed to do so at the competent local authority in Austria. This will depend on their nationality.
